Where to Eat in Val D'Orcia

Where to Eat in Val d’Orcia: Places Worth a Detour

In Val d’Orcia, eating well rarely requires ceremony.

The most memorable meals might happen on a terrace overlooking the valley, inside a tiny village osteria or around a table where lunch continues well into the afternoon.

The food is rooted in the landscape: hand-rolled pici, pecorino from Pienza, local olive oil, seasonal mushrooms, wild boar and the wines of Montalcino.

These are the places we genuinely recommend to guests — some close to the houses, some worth a slightly longer drive, and all worth building into a few days in the valley.

Chiostro Cennini, Sarteano

Chiostro Cennini is one of the most atmospheric places to eat locally.

Set within a historic cloister in the centre of Sarteano, it has a sense of place that makes the evening feel special before the food even arrives.

The old stone, courtyard setting and intimate atmosphere make it a particularly memorable choice for dinner.

Best for: a beautiful evening in a historic setting.

Da Nilo, Cetona

Da Nilo is a classic local address in Cetona and feels closely connected to the life of the town.

It is a good place for a straightforward Tuscan meal built around regional dishes and familiar flavours, without unnecessary formality.

Pair it with a walk through Cetona before or after lunch.

Best for: an authentic village meal.

Osteria La Porta, Monticchiello

Osteria La Porta sits at the entrance to Monticchiello and is one of the most beautiful places to linger over lunch or dinner.

The terrace looks out across the Val d’Orcia, while the cooking remains rooted in Tuscany.

Reserve outside when the weather allows and leave time to walk through Monticchiello afterwards.

Best for: a long lunch with one of the best views in the valley.

Ristorante Daniela, San Casciano dei Bagni

Located on the main square in San Casciano dei Bagni, Ristorante Daniela combines classic Tuscan cooking with a more refined touch.

The menu draws on local ingredients and regional traditions, while the setting gives the evening a sense of occasion without feeling formal.

Best for: a polished local dinner.

Terrazza della Val d’Orcia, Pienza

Terrazza della Val d’Orcia is all about the setting.

The view opens across the valley, while the menu follows the seasons and reflects the ingredients and flavours of the region.

This is the place to choose when the landscape and the meal should feel equally important.

Best for: lunch or dinner with a sweeping Val d’Orcia view.

What to order in Val d’Orcia

Menus change with the season, but there are several dishes worth looking for:

  • pici with garlic and tomato, breadcrumbs or wild boar ragù

  • pecorino di Pienza at different stages of ageing

  • crostini with chicken-liver pâté

  • grilled or slow-cooked meats

  • porcini mushrooms and truffles when in season

  • cantucci with vin santo to finish

Ask what is local and what has arrived that day. The best choice is often not the dish you had planned to order.

A few things to know

Restaurants in Val d’Orcia are often small, and the best-known tables can fill quickly during the warmer months.

Reserve in advance for dinner and for any restaurant you particularly want to visit. Opening days and hours can change with the season, so it is always worth confirming before setting out.

Most importantly, leave enough time.

Lunch is not an interruption to a day in Val d’Orcia. Very often, it is the day.

Our advice

Choose one or two places you are genuinely excited about and build them into your stay.

Not every meal needs to be a destination meal. Some evenings are better spent at home with bread, tomatoes, local cheese and wine.

The pleasure is in having both.
